Erika Arellano – Marine Biology graduate 2021
I want to keep learning new things, mostly related to marine animal conservation. Currently I am working on my thesis which is about the presence of microplastics in the bottlenose dolphin diet at La Paz, B.C.S. Bay. In the future I see myself helping the environment, creating awareness about life under the sea, its many benefits in our life and the beauty of it. I want to work at an aquarium/zoo/animal shelter and then travel to other countries to learn about other species. Also, write a book for kids explaining coral reef bleaching with simple terms for them to understand this complex process. I’d also include what we can do about this problem. This and many other things I’m willing to do!
I want to thank Green Scholarship Program and Bisbee’s Fish & Wildlife Conservation Fund for giving me and my classmates an amazing opportunity to reach for our dreams. You are inspiration for all of us, we will always have someone to look up to. Everyday I feel blessed for being part of this family, feeling so included and welcome. I feel secure with myself and capable of many things, thank you for encouraging me and for building leaders every generation. Thanks for all again, I hope we can pay you back by creating a better world and better tomorrow.
Jesika Oseguera – Interior Design graduate 2020
Before finishing high school, I thought a lot about college, my goals and dreams. I was thinking about when and how I could make them come true. My plan was to work in order to pay for my university studies; because I knew it would be costly and I also knew how difficult it would be for my mother since she has been my only support.
I remember perfectly that that afternoon I heard about Green Scholarship in an information session.
Weeks passed and the time had come to deliver all the requirements for applying for the scholarship. I remember that there were many applications from the students who also had the same desire to become professionals and among all those applications was mine. Despite having seen many applications I always thought positive.
When the day of the interview came, before leaving home my mother and I prayed that everything would go very well. I was very punctual in the interview, I cannot deny that I was nervous, but I also remember that before answering those questions I cleared my mind because I knew that I had to take advantage of the only opportunity that was going to change my life.
Weeks went by and I only thought about the scholarship. When I received the news that I was one of the Green Scholarship recipients.
My heart was beating fast, my body was jumping with joy, my hands wouldn’t stop sweating and I wouldn’t stop smiling because I couldn’t believe what was happening to me. I thanked God for that great blessing that He had allowed to come into my life.
My mother was very happy and grateful for the great opportunity they were giving me. My mom is a single mother and she is everything to me. I am proud of her because she has always found a way to continue supporting me with my studies. She did not have the opportunity to study, she has worked since childhood until today but thanks to her we always had what we needed in life.
From that moment on Green Scholarships means a lot in my life and in my mother’s life; Becas Green made me feel lucky to be part of this great family that always welcomes you with open arms. It supports you infinitely, it gives you the confidence and the courage to continue with your studies and to be able to achieve a path full of many opportunities.
When I started my career in Interior Design I felt a bit confused, because at that time there were things that I did not understand and I even thought that maybe it really wasn’t my thing. So I took my time, I thought about how I got there and the people who were behind all the support I was receiving. Then I understood that all things go through a process where there are ups and downs, I also discovered new skills that I was polishing which helped shape my professional profile.
Green Scholarship was always beside me in my career because it gave me English classes and self-improvement seminars that motivated me to keep going. Where they helped me to organize myself more because sometimes I felt that I did not have time to carry out the activities of each day. To control stress, control my emotions and above all the importance of teamwork. I loved taking those seminars because I got to know all the other scholars. The seminars made me improve as a person but also I was able to share with my friends and family some of the topics. Being able to help others made me feel very happy because I knew that in some way it was creating an impact in their lives.
Green Scholarships is family and hope.
Gehovany Aviles – Green Hospitality Program graduate 2019
My name is Gehovany Aviles. I am 24 years old. I have a degree in gastronomy and graduated from the first Green Hospitality Program (GHP) in 2019.
I found out about the program through my fiancée’s father, when he told me what it was about, I was impressed so I decided to apply. When I called to submit my application they told me that I needed to have full-time availability. I decided to take the risk and quit my previous job in advance because I was sure it was going to improve my life. The process of classes and internship was a bit difficult since I had my newborn daughter, but I knew that at the end I would be able to offer her a better future. In class, I learned a lot of things that I did not know about the hospitality industry, and the English classes helped me a lot. When the internship started I was nervous because I knew I had to give my best, going through all the departments made me realize how all the areas co-relate and how the work made by each one of the staff is connected to offer quality service. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to work in one of the kitchens of the Hotel. But I had in mind the importance of going through all the areas, so when I finally was going to practice in a kitchen I was very enthusiastic. On the third day of internship in one of the restaurants, the Chef offered me a job when the program ended.
I am very grateful for the opportunity that was given to me, I have learned many things and I am proud to be a graduate of the Green Hospitality Program.
Today I have a year and nine months working for Solaz and all of this is thanks to the opportunity that I was given, my perseverance and dedication.
Now every time someone asks me about what GHP is, I feel proud telling them about the program I was a part of.
